Hitchin’ is a coming of age musical that I wrote and first produced in Astoria, OR in November of 1997. Since then it has been produced successfully three other times in Astoria, most recently in February of 2013. Hitchin’ is the story of a young man who hitchhikes from Detroit, Michigan to Seattle WA during the summer of 1970. On that journey he encounters a variety of people who stop to pick him up and share their lives with him. Many themes are presented through these encounters including scenes of friendship, rebellion, sexuality, homophobia and aging. All this takes place during the contentious times of the Vietnam war and the societal upheaval it created.
All four productions have been performed by community theater groups but the play is suitable for high school and college audiences as well. I invite you to peruse the other pages of the website to see if this is something that might appeal to you to produce.
